Built
in 1934, this Nu’uanu Residence is a prime example of the kind of
architecture that was prolific in Hawaii at that time. There
was a graceful balance of Asian and European influences that gave
this structure that kama’aina sense of place. The clients wanted
to create a functional kitchen with modern amenities, alter the existing
front entry and port cochere so as to enhance the symmetry of the
foyer and living room within.
The second floor of the
original home was expanded to create six bedrooms, five bathrooms,
and a family room. Also a new outdoor dining area was created
that overlooked the landscaped interior courtyard and looked out toward
the existing indoor swimming pool beyond, which was also renovated.
